Tamil Nadu police registered a criminal case against suspended Ambasamudram Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Balveer Singh for allegedly inflicting custodial torture on several suspects.

The police initiated the action after the victims deposed before Senior IAS officer Amudha, who has been posted as the inquiry officer in the case.

On Monday, after Amudha reached Ambasamudram and summoned the victims, they deposed before her regarding the torture.

This is the second phase of high-level inquiry into the case. On April 10, Amudha reached Ambasamudram and met DC and ADM who investigated the matter.

The alleged custodial torture of Balveer Singh came to light after two brothers who were picked up by the police over a petting infighting between two groups of youths regarding a love affair released a video narrating the ordeal they faced in the custody of Ambasamudram police.

The brothers said Balveer Singh filled their mouths with gravel and hit them on their jaws.
The officer then made the other cops hold their hands and pulled out their teeth.

They also accused Balveer Singh of smashing the testicles of a newly married youth.

The victims alleged that Balveer Singh, who was clad in a t-shirt and trousers, took them to a room in the Ambasamudram police station and forcibly plucked their teeth while other policemen restrained them, said a report on IANS.

Following the video, several others came out and accused the officer of plucking the teeth of the accused using pliers.

Singh is a 2020 batch IPS officer. He is also a graduate of IIT Bombay. TN CM Stalin informed the Assembly that Ambasamudram ASP Balveer Singh has been placed under suspension on March 29, 2023.
