Chennai: AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam and Tamil Nadu Opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami led the protest conducted by the party against Tamil Nadu government's announcement to hike property taxes by at least 50% across the state on Tuesday. While Edappadi Palaniswami led the protest in Trichy, OPS led the protest at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai.

According to a report on ABP Nadu, Edappadi Palaniswami addressing the cadre in Trichy said, "The property taxes have been hiked in such a way that the people cannot afford to bear the expense. Even during the COVID-19 period, the government is increasing the tax."

Quoting the manifesto of DMK, EPS said, "DMK promised that property tax will not be hiked until the economy completely recovers from the effects of Covid-19. Hence, the hike just shows that the manifesto is framed just to mislead the people."

Therefore, the government should get back the announcement to hike property tax, he said.

Further, EPS said, "The number of gang rapes in the state is increasing. It is DMK that's doing governance against the people."

He alleged, "Stalin does not worry about the people after taking charge, he only worries about his family. He does not even know about the problems faced by the people."

EPS also criticized Stalin’s Dubai visit, revoking of marriage assistance scheme and price hike of construction materials.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters also gathered in Valluvar Kottam under the leadership of OPS to stage a protest against the hike.

The AIADMK members are staging a protest across the state even as Tamil Nadu Assembly Session is going to convene on Wednesday.
