Chennai: With a cinematic stunt, a gang of 10 masked robbers on Monday made a dramatic in a private finance company in Arumbakkam and robbed people who were gambling there of 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery, four gold rings, Rs 80,000 and mobiles worth Rs 50, 000.


According to Police, Vignesh, 26, of Kannappan Street Aminjikarai was running a finance firm. As the company was closed during lockdown, he along with others namely, Kumar, 43, of Ayapakkam, Ramkumnar, 33, Prabha, Appu, Bala, and Mohan would play cards for money.


When these men were gambling inside the firm, 10 masked men entered the firm with knives and logs. They threatened the victims at knifepoint to give up their valuables. When Kumar refused to hand over a chain, they attacked him and left him injured.

The gang attacked a few others to scare them and snatched their valuables and possessions. Hearing loud cries from the firm, a few passers-by rushed to premises and chased the robbers away. The gang escaped on different bikes which they had parked at distance.


The Aminjikarai police registered a case and are searching for the robbers.


Police suspect a role of an insider in the robbery as the gang hatched the plan to rob the group after noticing how often they gambled during the month-long lockdown.

Local residents told the police that the financial firm was being used as a club and visitors walked in were always seen wearing valuables and possessing huge sums of cash. They said that several cars were also parked outside the firm during evening hours.


Police officials are checking through CCTV camera footage for clue and are also questioning the victims. 


The victims will be booked for gambling, according investigating officer.
