New Delhi: National Commission for Women (NCW) on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the video which shows two women allegedly stripped naked and assaulted in West Bengal’s Malda, news agency ANI reported. Speaking to ANI, NCW chief Rekha Sharma said no medical examination has been done so far and nobody knows where the women are.

“I am in touch with a team from West Bengal's Malda and according to them nobody knows where the two women are. The medical examination has not been done, there are no arrest warrants issued, and no FIRs have been done. The family members of the women are worried...We are taking suo moto...My team will also go there,” Rekha Sharma told ANI.

Amid the massive outrage over the Manipur viral video which shows two women being paraded naked in the violence-hit state, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya shared the Malda video on Twitter and alleged two Tribal women were stripped naked, tortured and beaten mercilessly, while the police remained mute spectators in Pakua Hat area of Bamangola Police Station.

Attacking CM Mamata Banerjee, Malviya said that she chose to do nothing. "Neither did she condemn the barbarity nor did she express pain and anguish because it would have exposed her own failing as a Chief Minister," he added.

Union Minister Smriti Irani questioned Congress's 'silence' over the viral video from Malda and called the party a 'mute spectator'.

Reacting to it, state minister Shashi Panja said that there was no need to politicise the incident. She said that it was a case of theft where the two ladies tried stealing from the market and other women started thrashing them. Panja mentioned that a case has been registered into the matter.

"There is absolutely no need to politicise the Malda incident. It was a case of theft, where the two ladies tried to steal something from the market. A group of women tried to take law & order into their hands and started beating them. However, the police reached the spot. A case has been registered & police are investigating the matter," the TMC leader told ANI.
