The junior doctors, who are protesting against the RG Kar rape and murder, are at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence for a meeting to resolve the impasse.
The meeting comes after CM Mamata invited the protesting medics to attend a meeting at her residence at 6 pm over the RG Kar protests. She had earlier paid surprise visit to the RG Kar protest site urging the protestors to end the agitation.
The protesting doctors had then expressed their willingness to hold a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resolve the impasse. West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant then announced that Mamata was scheduled to hold a meeting with junior doctors at 6 pm on Saturday with a delegation of 15 representatives.
The medics, earlier today, sent a mail to the Bengal government expressing their willingness to hold a meeting with Mamata Banerjee over the RG Kar issue, news agency PTI reported on Saturday. They said that they will attend the meeting to resolve the impasse at the Chief Minister's residence and put forward five demands before her.
Mamata Banerjee on Saturday made a surprise visit to the site where the junior doctors were protesting and assured them that she would look into their demands and take action if anyone was found guilty.
Addressing the protesting doctors outside the Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, the CM said she had been spending sleepless nights because the medics were agitating on the road amid rains and described her visit as the last attempt to resolve the crisis.
Accompanied by DGP Rajiv Kumar, Banerjee reached the site in Sector 5 around 1 pm, taking those present there by surprise.
"I came to meet you as your 'didi' (elder sister) not as the chief minister. I assure you that I will study your demands and take action if someone is found guilty," she said.
She urged the protesting doctors to return to work and added she would never allow any injustice to them. She added that this is her last attempt to resolve the crisis.
The medics have been camping outside Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the state Health Department, since Tuesday with a host of demands, including better security at state-run hospitals and the removal of top officials over the rape and murder of the doctor.
The state government had invited the doctors for a meeting with Banerjee on Thursday to resolve the crisis. However, the doctors remained outside the state secretariat and refused to meet with Mamata Banerjee over the demand to livestream the talks. The junior doctors have been protesting for over a month, affecting the public healthcare services.
