The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea against the 12-hour 'Bangla Bandh' called by the BJP since the petitioner was debarred from filing public interest litigations (PIL) before the court in a previous order. Petitioner Sanjoy Das, who claimed to be a lawyer practicing at the high court, sought that the bandh be declared illegal.

"The disciplinary committee duly constituted by the National President Dr R V ASOKAN today suo moto considered the rape and murder of a postgraduate resident and the subsequent developments in RG Kar Medical College Kolkata. The undersigned along with the National President had also visited the parents of the victim in their home. They had put up their grievances against you in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them. IMA Bengal state branch as well as certain associations of doctors also have demanded action citing the nature of disrepute brought by you to the profession on the whole. The disciplinary committee of IMA HQs has unanimously decided to suspend you forthwith from the membership of Indian Medical Association," Ghosh's suspension letter read.

West Bengal BJP called a 12-hour Bangla bandh on August 28 against the police action taken on students demonstrating against the Kolkata doctor's rape and murder, aiming to reach the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna, as part of their Nabanna Abhijan. The protest march turned chaotic in Kolkata and adjacent Howrah as hundreds gathered to demand justice for the RG Kar Hospital victim and resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee.


Large-scale violence ensued on the streets of Kolkata and Howrah on Tuesday afternoon after protestors clashed with the police at multiple stoppage points. The violence lasted for around four hours, leading to several injuries on both sides.


Several senior police officers and women protestors were among those who were hurt in the violent protests.  Over 200 people were arrested by the police from across the state as protestors took to incessant stone and glass bottles pelting on the police at various spots where their march was stopped.


A police personnel said that fifteen personnel of the Kolkata Police and 14 from the state police force were injured in the clashes. Police had to even resort to large-scale lathi-charge, unleash water cannons, and lob tear gas shells to disperse the protestors who marched from multiple converging points at Nabanna.    


BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that over 160 protestors, including 17 women, suffered injuries in the police action. Condemning the action taken by police on protestors, BJP Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar called a 12-hour Bangla bandh on Wednesday.


State’s LoP Suvendu Adhikari also urged Governor CV Ananda Bose to "impose President’s Rule" in the state.          


Following the call for bandh, Bengal government urged people not to respond to BJP’s 6am–6pm strike. "The government will not allow any bandh on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in it. All steps shall be taken to ensure that normal life is unaffected," the chief advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Alapan Bandopadhyay said.  


The state government also issued a notification stating that all government offices would remain open and all employees, except those on leave, would have to report to office on August 28, failing which they would face show-cause for their unauthorised absence.
