New Delhi: The ruling Trinamool Congress continued its juggernaut in the civic polls, winning four municipal corporations in West Bengal on Monday.
The Mamata Banerjee-led party received a shot in the arm after snatching the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) from the CPI(M)-led Left Front.
According to the State Election Commission, the TMC won 39 out of 41 seats in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. While the Congress managed to bag one seat, BJP and the CPI(M) failed to open their account. An Independent candidate secured victory in one ward.
In Chandernagore, the TMC bagged 31 of the 32 seats, while the CPI(M) won in one ward.
The TMC won 66 of the 106 seats in Asansol while the BJP won in five seats, and the CPI(M) and Congress in two each.
However, the major success story for TMC came from Siliguri, where it bagged 37 out of 47 seats.
The BJP clinched five seats, whereas the Left was relegated to the third position as it managed to win only four seats, the SEC said. The Congress managed to secure only one seat.
The TMC's vote share in Siliguri was 78.72 per cent. The BJP and CPI(M) managed 10.64 per cent and 8.5 per cent of the vote share respectively.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that party leader Gautam Deb, who won by a margin of 3,000 votes, would be the next mayor of SMC, PTI reported.
Banerjee thanked people for her party's thumping win in the civic polls, calling it a victory of the masses.
"It is once again an overwhelming victory of Ma, Mati, Manush. My heartiest congratulations to the people of Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri & Chandanagore for having put their faith and confidence on All India Trinamool Congress candidates in the Municipal Corporation elections," Mamata Banerjee tweeted.
"We are committed to carry forward our development work further with greater zeal and enthusiasm," she said.
The TMC also won the Kolkata Municipal Corporation election held in December 2021. The TMC had swept the election, bagging 134 out of 144 wards. The BJP finished second with three seats.
