Rain continues to batter several regions across the state of Maharashtra leading to severe waterlogging. Residents in Yavatmal face submerged roads and houses as incessant rain lashes the town. Meanwhile, a search and rescue operation at the landslide-hit area in Rajgad is underway by the NDRF officials. According to ANI, so far, 22 dead bodies have been recovered from the site.
Meanwhile, intermittent rains continue in Mumbai this morning after heavy showers lashed the financial capital on Friday. Persistent Downpour has led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions.
IMD has issued a red alert for the Palgarh district neighbouring Mumbai for Saturday whereas an orange alert has been issued for Mumbai and Thane.
The search and rescue operation at Irshalwadi hamlet in Maharashtra's Raigad district resumed for the third day on Saturday after a massive landslide claimed the lives of at least 22 people. According to PTI, 86 villagers are yet to be traced, officials said. The landslide occurred on Wednesday night.
The death toll till Thursday evening was 16 which rose to 22 after six more bodies were recovered on Friday, as per PTI.
The deceased included nine men, as many women and four children. PTI mentioned that nine members of a family perished in the disaster, officials have said. The search operation was suspended at around 6 pm on Friday due to heavy rains, an NDRF official said, as quoted by PTI.
Meanwhile, of the six victims whose bodies were pulled out on Friday, three were men and three women. The PTI report mentioned that the village does not have a pucca road making it difficult for earth movers and excavators to move forcing the officials to carry out the rescue operation manually.
According to ANI, one team of NDRF reached the site early this morning and more of its teams are expected to join the operation later in the day. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray will visit the affected people lodged in a nearby temple.
As per a release issued by the office of the Deputy Director of Publicity, Konkan division, as many as 60 containers have been requisitioned to be used as transit camps for the survivors, reported PTI. It added that 40 of these have already reached the location. Apart from this, 20 temporary toilets and an equal number of bathrooms have been set up at the site, it said, stated the PTI report.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday told the assembly that the state government has decided to shift the residents of all landslide-prone areas in the state to safer locations.
The landslide struck Irshalwadi, a tribal village situated on a hill slope in the coastal district, approximately 80 km from Mumbai, on Wednesday night. As the situation worsens, Maharashtra faces an emergency flood threat due to continuous rains, leading to numerous homes flooding and blocking roadways. Particularly affected is Kolhapur, where severe flooding has resulted in reports of many people being stranded.
