The Uttar Pradesh election commission will hold a press conference on Sunday around 7 pm, where it is expected to announce the state's model code of conduct for the upcoming civic body elections. The state election commission is expected to announce polling dates today. The code of conduct could be imposed in the state as early as today.
Earlier on Friday, the state election commission issued a notice about the upcoming urban local body elections in the state. In a notification, the commission capped the expenditure limits for candidates contesting civic body elections.
The commission also stated that elections will be held for 14,684 seats in the state's 760 urban local bodies. The election will be held for 17 mayor seats, 1,420 corporator seats, 199 nagar palika parishad chairperson seats, 5,327 nagar palika parishad member seats, 544 nagar panchayat chairperson seats, and 7,178 nagar panchayat member seats. EVMs will be used to vote on 17 mayoral seats and 1,420 Corporator seats across the state. Ballots will be used to vote for the remaining posts.
In the upcoming local urban body elections in Uttar Pradesh, more than 4.23 crore voters will exercise their franchise. According to state election commissioner Manoj Kumar, the total number of urban voters for the local urban body elections in 2023 has increased to 4,32,31,827 from 3,35,95,547 in 2017.

"According to the final data received by the commission following voter list revision, a total of 96,36,280 new voters were added this time," Kumar said. He stated that the inclusion of a large number of rural areas into nagar nigams, nagar palikas, and nagar panchayats was the primary reason for this increase.
"As many as 21,23,268 of the total new voters were previously village residents before relocating to cities," he clarified. He said that 4,33,088 of the voters were first-time voters who turned 18 on January 1, 2023.
