New Delhi: Giving a new twist to the Kanpur businessman’s death case, Rajya Sabha MP of the Aam Aadmi Party Sanjay Singh has shared a video on Thursday where UP police officials can be seen allegedly trying to dissuade the family of the businessman from legally pursuing the case.

A video clip shared by the MP on Twitter has once again raised questions on the functioning of the Uttar Pradesh Police. In the purported video, one of the officials can be seen telling the family that a court case will take years.

"I am requesting you like an elder brother. After a court case, you will not believe, it takes years in court," one of the officials can be seen telling the victim’s family.

The video shared by Sanjay Singh showed another official saying, "They did not have any previous enmity. They went in uniform and that is why I am listening to you since morning. You asked for them to be suspended and I did that. They will not be reinstated till they get a clean chit."

Sanjay Singh tweeted the video asking for justice saying, "The SP has said "there was no quarrel with the policemen before" means that an innocent person was murdered without any crime. So why no FIR? How to get justice?"

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav reached Kanpur on Thursday and met the family members of Manish Gupta. After meeting the relatives, Akhilesh lashed out at the Yogi government and the UP Police.

Along with this, he also demanded a compensation of Rs 2 crore from the state government for the family of Manish Gupta. Along with this, he also announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the victim's family on behalf of the party.

Describing it as a serious incident, the SP chief said the responsibility of the police is to protect the people, but during the tenure of CM Yogi Adityanath in the BJP government, the police are not protecting but killing people. Such behavior of the police in UP would not have been seen in any government. The former chief minister said that if action was taken against such officers guilty in the past, then the incident with Manish Gupta could have been averted.

Alleging that the police are harassing and killing people in the BJP government, the SP chief said such incidents happen as the intention of the government is not clear. Such incidences have become rampant due to the police's thumping policy. Akhilesh announced Rs 20 lakh compensation to the family. He also demanded the present judge of the High Court to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has spoken to the victim's wife, Meenakshi Gupta, and extended his condolences while the state government announced Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance for the family.

For the uninitiated, a case of murder has been registered against six policemen in connection with the death of a Kanpur-based businessman here.

While the opposition had attacked the BJP government over the incident, with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleging that the UP Police is "soft" on criminals and "brutal" with common people.
