Five university students were killed and two others injured when a truck collided with a car in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The incident occurred on the Chennai-Tirupati National Highway in Tiruvallur, near Tiruttani.
The Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) in which the students were travelling was reportedly speeding and the driver lost control of the vehicle and had a head-on collision with the truck.
According to IANS, the students were on their way to their native town Ongole in Andhra Pradesh from Chennai when the accident occurred. They were all third-year engineering students at a private college in Chennai.
The two injured students — Chaitanya, 21 and Vishnu, 20 — were rushed to the Thiruvallur Government Hospital for treatment. The deceased were identified as Chetan, 24, Nitish Varma, 20, Nitesh, 20, Ram Mohan Reddy, 21 and Yogesh, 21.
The Tiruvallur Police, the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services and local residents had to cut open the overturned MUV to retrieve the bodies and the injured trapped inside. Due to the rescue operation, the road was blocked for more than an hour.
Tiruttani police have registered a case and are investigating the accident. According to an India Today report, police have detained the truck driver.
Accident Between Container Truck & Mini Truck
In June, six persons died in a head-on collision between a container and a Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. In the impact of the collision, the drivers of both vehicles, along with three other occupants, died on the spot. Another victim succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital.
A police official said at the time of the accident that one of the trucks was carrying 10 people, while the other vehicle had a driver and an assistant.
