After a brief spell of rain bringing relief from the heat, Tamil Nadu is set to witness light to moderate showers in isolated areas across the state, including Puducherry and Karaikal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, the IMD has also predicted a rise in temperatures increasing by 2-3°C between March 13 and 15 in other pockets of the state.

The IMD report, issued on Wednesday, indicated that a cyclonic circulation persists over the West Equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining Maldives region at 0.9 km above sea level. Additionally, a trough that previously hovered over the Southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu’s coast now extends from the cyclonic circulation to the same region. Another cyclonic circulation has been observed over the Comorin area at 5.8 km above sea level, contributing to the present weather conditions.

Rainfall In Tamil Nadu

While widespread rainfall was recorded in several districts on Wednesday, the current forecast suggests only isolated light rain over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Chennai is likely to experience light rain in some areas, accompanied by mist or haze during early morning hours.

On Wednesday, regions in Kallakurichi district recorded the highest rainfall, with Thiyagadurgam receiving 16 mm and Kallakurichi 15 mm, and Gomugi Dam 12 mm.

In contrast, minimal rainfall of 1 mm was reported in Sholingur (Ranipet), Sankarankoil (Tenkasi), Marandahalli (Dharmapuri), Ramanadhi Dam (Tenkasi), Tiruttani (Tiruvallur), and a few other locations. Thanjavur recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 35.0°C.

Advisory For Residents

On Wednesday, the IMD has issued an advisory warning of light thunderstorms and lightning, along with light to moderate rain, at isolated locations in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Ramanathapuram districts. The department cautioned about waterlogging in low-lying areas, slippery roads, and potential traffic disruptions.

Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions while commuting.
