Tamil Nadu news: A fire broke out at a women's hostel in Katrapalayam, Madurai, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to two others. The injured were promptly taken to nearby government and private hospitals for treatment.


The hostel, which housed over 40 students, was engulfed in flames, prompting an immediate response from local authorities and emergency services. Madurai District Collector, MS Sangeetha, confirmed the casualties and stated, "Two people died, and two others were injured and have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. An inquiry is underway with the hostel owner, and appropriate action will be taken."


The deceased women have been identified as Parimala and Saranya. Police reported that the fire caused excessive smoke, resulting in their deaths due to suffocation.

The fire was reported around 4:50 AM after a mini refrigerator exploded in one of the rooms at Visaka Women's Hostel, according to the police. The hostel, located near Periyar Bus Stand, where the incident occurred, is currently embroiled in a property litigation and has not renewed its license. District Collector MS Sangeetha stated that the administration would take strict action against illegal constructions that violate regulations.


However, the cause of the fire would be confirmed after authorities complete a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident. The local administration has assured strict action against any lapses in safety protocols that may have contributed to the tragedy.
