Tamil Nadu police have apprehended an advocate in connection with the murder of K. Armstrong, the state chief of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Wednesday. The accused identified as Ashwathaman, the son of Nagendran, a well-known history-sheeter currently lodged in

Vellore Central Prison.

Till now, the police have arrested 22 persons including members of DMK, AIADMK, Tamil Manila Congress and BJP.

Following his arrest, Ashwathaman has been removed from the primary membership of the Congress.

On July 5, K. Armstrong, aged 53, was murdered in front of his under-construction house on Venugopal Swami Koil Street in Perambur, Chennai. The police had initially arrested eight individuals, including Ponnai Belu, the brother of Arcot V. Suresh, who was killed on August 18, 2023.

The murder is believed to have stemmed from a long-standing enmity related to the Aarudhra investment scam, in which crores of rupees were swindled. Suresh was reportedly representing the interests of the scam's promoters, while Armstrong was advocating for the investors who suffered significant losses due to the fraudulent scheme, according to a report on IANS.

Meanwhile, one of the accused, Thiruvengadam, was fatally shot by the police during an encounter on July 13 near Madhavaram in Chennai. Thiruvengadam, a known criminal, had reportedly been monitoring Armstrong for several days prior to the murder, keeping a close watch on the BSP leader's movements.

The Greater Chennai Police continue to probe the case seeking to bring justice to Armstrong's family and hold all those responsible accountable.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu CM Stalin, BJP chief K Annamalai among others visited the residence of Tamil Nadu BSP president K Armstrong to meet his bereaved family. The CM after paying homage floral tributes to the portrait of Armstrong consoled Porkodi, wife of Armstrong and assured necessary help.
