Former sarpanch of Meghowal Ganjian village in Punjab and a local Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Surjit Singh, was shot dead by two unidentified men on Thursday evening, police said. The incident took place at around 7 pm on Thursday when Singh was sitting with some of his friends in the village. According to police, two bike-borne assailants opened fire on him and then fled from the spot. Singh was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.


"Surjit Singh, the former Sarpanch of village Megowal Ganjian, whose wife is now the Sarpanch, was sitting with some of his friends in the village at 7 pm when two people riding a motorcycle opened fire on him. The accused fled from the spot. Surjit Singh was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway," Talwinder Singh, DCP Hoshiarpur, said.






Police said that the accused fired 3-4 rounds on him. Singh's wife is the sarpanch of the village at present.
