New Delhi: A 55-year-old woman was subjected to assault and paraded semi-naked allegedly by her son's in-laws in from Valtoha village of Punjab’s Tarn Taran, news agency PTI reported. The purported video of the woman being paraded semi-naked surfaced on the social media on Friday.

According to police, the altercation stemmed from the marriage of the victim's son, who had eloped with a woman against the wishes of her family. The situation escalated when the son's in-laws visited the victim's residence. In her complaint, the woman said that she was alone at home when she was allegedly assaulted by her son's in-laws, who tore off her clothes and paraded her in a semi-naked condition through the village.

Based on the complaint lodged by the victim, police have booked five people in connection with the case. Three of them have been identified as Kulwinder Kaur Mani, Sharanjit Singh Shanni, and Gurcharan Singh.

An FIR was registered on April 3, invoking various sections of the Indian Penal Code including assault with intent to outrage modesty, use of criminal force to disrobe, stalking, causing hurt, and unlawful assembly.

However, no arrests have been made so far, the police said.

Taking note of the incident, National Commission for Women posted, "Deeply disturbed by the horrifying incident in Tarn Taran's Valtoha village, Punjab. The assault and semi-naked parade of a 55-year-old woman is appalling. Honourable Chairperson NCW Rekha Sharma has taken suo motu cognisance in the matter and has directed DGP Punjab to take swift action, to arrest the culprits and remove the circulated video."

Earlier last month, police in Vantamuri village of Belagavi district reported an incident of seven months back where a woman was paraded naked. The incident came to light after her daughter filed a police complaint.

The incident took place after the woman allegedly raised objections regarding the encroachment on her government-allocated land.

A video purportedly showing the woman's naked parade, dated seven months back, went viral, prompting swift action from police, as reported by PTI.

According to police, the incident took place on July 31, 2023, when the woman and her son were allegedly assaulted by their rivals for challenging the encroachment of half an acre of land on the three-acre plot allocated to her by the government.
