New Delhi: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday granted bail to singer Daler Mehndi in a 2003 human trafficking case, as reported by news agency ANI. Daler Mehndi was sentenced to 3 years in the human trafficking case, from which he has been suspended. The appeal filed by Daler Mehndi in the High Court against the sentence has been admitted by the High Court. In the 19-year-old human trafficking case, the trial court of Patiala convicted Daler Mehndi and sentenced him to 3 years imprisonment.
He challenged this decision of three years imprisonment by filing an appeal in the High Court. After which he got relief in the 19-year-old case. According to the reports, he is lodged in the same Patiala jail where cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is kept. But, now after the order of the court, Daler Mehndi will be released from Patiala Jail and further hearing of this case will continue in the Punjab-Haryana High Court.
On the petition filed by the singer, a notice was issued to the Punjab government and a reply was sought. After which the High Court fixed the next hearing of the case for 15 September i.e. today. Under which, in the hearing today, the court, while giving its verdict, has granted him relief.
Human Trafficking Case
This 19-year-old case is related to human trafficking. Along with Daler Mehndi, his brother Shamsher Singh was also an accused in this case. But he died in the year 2017. After which, in the year 2018, the court sentenced Daler Mehndi to be guilty in this case.
A person named Bakshi Singh lodged a complaint with the Patiala Sadar police station in 2003. He alleged that Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh had taken 13 lakh rupees to send him to Canada. But, neither he was sent to Canada nor his money was returned. Bakshish Singh was accompanied by 30 other complainants who made serious allegations of human trafficking against him.
