After a video showing him brutally flogging NCC cadets at a college in Maharashtra's Thane went viral on social media, the student was suspended on Friday, the Maharashtra National Cadet Corp (NCC) said in a statement.
The incident happened during a training session at the Joshi Bedekar College. The video shows around eight junior students from National Cadet Corps (NCC) being subjected to flogging by a "senior". The cadets are seen in a push-up position in a muddy area with their feet and head touching the ground and hands folded above the back.
"The action being extremely condemnable is neither a part of any NCC training or organised activity. The NCC is extremely disturbed at the fact that the perpetrator is a cadet or an ex cadet as per the statement of the Principal of the said college. The student has been suspended by the college," Maharashtra National Cadet Corp said.
"We at NCC inculcate social values and military ethos in our cadets by setting personal example, this action has no place whatsoever in it," the statement further said.
The corporal-style thrashing has triggered outrage in Maharashtra.
Principal of Joshi Bedekar College Suchitra Naik has appealed to the students and their parents to come forward and help in identifying the seniors who were behind the act.
She has also urged them to lodge complaints in the matter. While condemning the incident, Naik said that authorities have initiated action and none would be spared. Naik said, "The person seen in the video beating students is not a teacher. We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. The students who faced this should not be scared."
Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jitendra Awhad expressed shock over the alleged incident and demanded that the government must take immediate action in the matter.
"This is unbelievable… Such a thing is going on… We demand strict action in this case," Awhad told media persons in Mumbai.
