New Delhi: During the BJP's 'Nabanna campaign' against the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal, there were a lot of ruckuses witnessed in Howrah, Santragachi and Kolkata in West Bengal. The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday sought stringent action from the Kolkata Police against its male officers who allegedly assaulted a senior BJP leader and an FIR against them.
NCW took to took Twitter and said it has come across a video clip, in which senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Meena Devi Purohit is seen getting brutally assaulted by male police officers during a "Nabanna Cholo" (march to the state secretariat) rally in Kolkata.
NCW took note of the incident saying, the brutality perpetrated on a woman is condemnable in the strongest possible words.
"You are, therefore, required to take stringent action against the erring male police officers and file an FIR under the aforementioned provisions of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. The brutality meted out to the woman by a male police officer reflects the fact that law enforcement is not working efficiently in Kolkata and stricter rules and regulations need to be made in order to prevent such actions of the police," the NCW said in its letter to Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal.
"There is a dire need to hold the police accountable for its actions. Also, tender a written explanation as to why no action has been taken in the matter against the culprit male police officers till now," the NCW said.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court sought a report from West Bengal Home Secretary by September 19 over the chaos during BJP's 'Nabanna Chalo' march. The HC also directed the police not to "illegally" detain any person and also ensure that there was no damage to public property.
