Muzaffarnagar: In an incident of religious conversion, five families that had converted to Islam 18 years back, reconverted to Hinduism, in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh.

All the families had left the Hindu religion 18 years back and converted to Islam. They were 'purified' after performing a 'Havan Yagna' at Arya Samaj Temple in Baghra block of Muzaffarnagar on Tuesday and were converted back to Hinduism.

During the rituals, the members of all the families were garlanded and given a grand welcome. They were also 'purified' through the recitation of 'Gayatri Mantri' amid 'Om' chantings.

Meanwhile, Yashvir Maharaj of the Arya Samaj Temple, alleged that when the Samajwadi Party (SP) formed the government in Uttar Pradesh, some clerics and maulvis roamed several districts, including Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Baghpat and Rampur, pressurizing Hindu families from economically weaker background to convert to Islam. At the same time, families who opposed it were intimidated and threatened. Not only that, there were also talks of sending Hindu families to jail and converting them to Islam, he said.

On the other hand, returning from Islam to Hinduism, a woman from Baghpat said that she was lured into converting to Islam. Earlier her name was Mithlesh, which was changed to Zarina Khatun. After reconverting to Hinduism, the woman alleged that she had converted to Islam when the Samajwadi Party was in power in the state, but now she has returned to Hinduism during the tenure of Yogi Adityanath's government.
