The Maharashtra government on Tuesday ordered the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe an alleged attempt by a group of people from the Muslim community to forcefully enter the famous Trimbakeshwar temple in Nashik. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered forming the investigation team and registering an FIR in the case. As per the order, the SIT will work under the chairmanship of officers of the rank of Additional Director General of Police.

  1. According to the media reports, some people of the Muslim community tried to forcefully enter the Trimbakeshwar temple from the main gate to offer ‘chadar’. PTI reported a temple trust official as saying that the security guards at the temple had thwarted the group's attempt on Saturday night.  

  2. Following the uproar, the office of Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis tweeted, “Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered strict action by registering an FIR on the alleged incident of a certain mob gathering at the main entrance of the Trimbakeshwar temple."

  3. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also ordered the formation of an SIT under the chairmanship of officers of the rank of Additional Director General of Police to investigate the incident, the tweet further read. 

  4. The probe ordered by the Fadnavis’ office says that the incident when a certain mob allegedly entered the Trimbakeshwar temple premises through the main entrance last year will also be investigated thoroughly. IG level officer has been appointed by setting up SIT to investigate this entire matter. 

  5. Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde reacted to the incident and said, "It's the responsibility of the administration to maintain law and order but people must also cooperate. People from every community must come forward and maintain peace."

  6.  BG Shekhar, IG Nashik said, "There’s peace in Trimbakeshwar and there’s no problem in the law and order situation. We will proceed investigation as per the rules and regulations & will take further action on that basis. Our police inspector in Trimbakeshwar will do the further investigation."

  7. As per the temple management, PTI stated, only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple - one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple trust meanwhile submitted a complaint to the police. Notably, some video clips of the incident went viral on social media platforms. 

  8. Nashik Rural's SP Shahaji Uma left for Trimbakeshwar temple following the orders of Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis. 

  9. Meanwhile, Sant Samaj has expressed gratitude to Devendra Fadnavis after the Home Minister ordered to set up SIT and investigate the incident in Trimbakeshwar temple. 

  10.  According to the office of Deputy CM Fadnavis, with the intention of destroying the Hindu deity Trimbakeshwar (Jyotirlinga), around 10-12 youths from the Muslim community tried to enter the temple. 

  11. They climbed the wall from the second and went inside the temple after security guards thwarted their attempt. The youths reportedly tried to put a ‘Green Chadar’ and a sheet of flowers on Lord Trimbakeshwar, the deputy CM's office said.

  12. Meanwhile, Hindu organisations in Nashik have opposed it. So far, 4 to 5 people have been arrested by Trimbakeshwar police.
