After the brutal crime in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and the hooliganism unleashed on the protesting students on the eve of Independence Day, the Indian Medical Association declares nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors from 6 AM on Saturday to 6 AM Sunday, for 24 hours.
"All essential services will be maintained. Casualties will be manned. Routine OPDs will not function and elective surgeries will not be conducted. The withdrawal is across all the sectors wherever modern medicine doctors are providing service. IMA requires the sympathy of the nation with the just cause of its doctors," IMA said.
Doctors staged a protest at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi in support of the woman doctor who was sexually assaulted and murdered in RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.
On the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, Delhi Medical Association state secretary Dr Prakash Lalchandani said: “This incident is even more horrifying than the Nirbhaya case. In this case, the victim's doctor was in the so-called safe college campus. If this can happen inside the college, then there’s definitely a need to think about this.”
On the RG Kar hospital vandalism, BJP leader RP Singh said: "If this is done by the BJP and the Left, then she (West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee) should resign immediately. She is the state's Home Minister, and the local intelligence (department) comes under her jurisdiction. If it has failed, it is her responsibility, and she has no right to remain the CM. Actually, this was done by her party only because they are trying to save someone."
Tala Police station in-charge Abhijit Mondal reached the CBI office in Kolkata in connection with the RG Kar doctor's death case.

Such was their perversity that the unruly mob tried to break into the Girls' Hostel at midnight when the Policemen took refuge inside the toilets," he posted on X.
"I have written to the Hon'ble Home Secretary; Ministry of Home Affairs; Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the Hon’ble Director, Central Bureau of Investigation, regarding the vandalism that took place at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital and requested them to deploy Central Armed Paramilitary Forces to prevent further destruction of evidence at R G Kar," he added.

On the mob vandalising the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said: "...There is no law and order in West Bengal. 2000-2500 goons barged into the medical college late at night. Doctors were beaten up and threatened, the police remained silent. If a state government cannot maintain law and order in its capital, then it has no right to remain in power...Attempts were made to destroy evidence...I will reach the RG Kar Medical College tomorrow and protest."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for speedy action against atrocities on women amid an uproar over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College last week. According to sources, at least 15 policemen were injured in yesterday's incident of vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. "Nine people have been arrested for violence during the protest. The police team is investigating the case to find out who is behind this incident. The video going viral on social media is being investigated. CCTV footage of the area is being scanned. Anti-Rowdy Section (ARS) of Kolkata Police has been put to work," said sources.
They said some violent protesters have been identified. Efforts are being made to reach them.

"The hooliganism and vandalism at RG Kar tonight have exceeded all acceptable limits. As a public representative, I just spoke with @CPKolkata [Kolkata Commissioner of Police], urging him to ensure that every individual responsible for today’s violence is identified, held accountable, and made to face the law within the next 24 hours, regardless of their political affiliations," Abhishek Banerjee said in an X post after the attack at RG Kar MCH.

Protesters gathered at the hospital premises on Wednesday night to demand quick justice for the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at the facility on August 9. During this protest, which was intended to be peaceful, some "outsiders" allegedly stormed the hospital building and vandalised the facility.

Amid the mounting attacks on the Trinamool Congress-led government in West Bengal over the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit back at the opposition, accusing them of trying to grab power in the state by organising "Bangladesh-like protests".
