RG Kar Doctor Death: With voices against the Kolkata rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor gaining strength, trouble seems to be rising for Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar medical college, who got a new appointment, just hours after he resigned from the institute where the heinous crime took place. Two days after the Calcutta High Court sent Dr Ghosh an indefinite leave, his old neighbours have come forward alleging he's a wife-beater and had kicked his wife in the belly two weeks after she gave birth to their child.
Sandip Ghosh has been in the news since the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the RG Kar MCH premises last week. The neighbours of the orthopaedic specialist, from the time when he used to live in the Mallick Bagan area of North 24 Parganas district's Barasat, also claimed he used to charge extra fees while seeing patients at his home. The controversial doctor had permanently moved to Kolkata several years ago.
"Sandip Ghosh kicked his wife's belly 14 days after her delivery. That day neighbours went to Sandip's house after hearing the screams. He found out that Sandip kicked his wife's belly. It had been only 14 days since the wife gave birth. Locals rescued her and took her to a hospital...There, the doctors said that several of the woman's stitches had opened due to the impact of the beating," a report by Hindustan Times Bangla quoted Ghosh's former neighbour as saying.
According to the report, Ghosh's wife was also a doctor at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College in Kolkata.
The locals also claimed that Ghosh used to examine patients in his house despite being appointed at a government facility. "Many locals used to visit him. But he used to take extra fees," neighbours said.
It was alleged that Ghosh's mother was also very "cruel" towards his wife and child and she "did not even give clothes for the baby when it was born".
This is not the first time Ghosh made headlines. His tenure as principal of RG Kar was marred by several controversies in the past including transfer reversals. He was transferred twice in the past from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital but was reinstated, purportedly after he flexed his influence.
He is an "extremely corrupt man", a former senior official of the facility has claimed. Akhtar Ali, ex-deputy superintendent of RG Kar MCH, alleged that Sandip Ghosh used to run a mafia within the institution.
"He [Sandip Ghosh] is a very corrupt person. He used to fail students, he used to avail 20% commission on tender orders... He used to take money for every work that was done at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He used to supply alcohol to students at his guesthouse... He was like a mafia person," Akhtar Ali said.
