A four-month-old baby girl, who went missing from her home on Monday night, was found dead in a well near her residence in Pappinisseri, Kannur, under mysterious circumstances, police reported on Tuesday.

According to the infant’s father, the baby was sleeping in the central hall of their house along with her parents and other family members around 9:30 PM, as per a report on PTI. At approximately 11 PM, the child’s mother discovered that the baby was missing and immediately alerted her husband. The family then conducted an extensive search of their home and nearby areas.

Tragically, the baby was later found inside a well close to their house. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she was declared dead before arrival, authorities said.

The police were informed of the incident at around 4 AM on Tuesday. An investigation has been launched, and an FIR has been registered under Section 194(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which pertains to deaths occurring under suspicious circumstances.

Authorities are now thoroughly examining the Kannur case to determine if foul play was involved. The police are expected to question family members and neighbours while awaiting forensic reports to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.

Similar Incident

This incident is similar to a case from January this year. Two months back, a two-year-old girl in Balaramapuram, Thiruvananthapuram, went missing while sleeping with her parents.

She was later found dead in a well near their home. Following an investigation, the child’s maternal uncle, who lived in the same house, confessed to the crime and was subsequently arrested.

The deceased baby was Devendu, the daughter of Sreetu and Sreejith. Soon after the incident, MLA M Vincent visited the scene. Further, he said that it appeared unlikely for such a young child to have accidentally fallen into the well
