A police driver in the Kannur district of Kerala has been booked for attempt to murder after allegedly ramming his vehicle into a petrol pump employee on Sunday. Police said the driver, identified as K. Santhosh Kumar, drove away with the petrol pump employee, Anil, clinging to the bonnet of the car when asked to pay for the fuel.

The suspect has been arrested and suspended from duty, PTI quoted police as saying. Kannur city police commissioner Ajith Kumar said multiple charges, including attempted murder, have been invoked against the accused.

The arrest of the accused was formally documented on Monday, he added. Kumar said the incident occurred on Sunday evening when Anil was allegedly attacked by the police driver who attempted to flee without paying for the fuel.

CCTV footage of Anil hanging onto the bonnet of the speeding car as it travelled nearly a kilometre down a busy highway quickly went viral.

The video shows Anil arguing with the accused. As the confrontation escalates, the driver suddenly accelerates, causing Anil to be thrown onto the bonnet of the car. The vehicle then continues to be driven on a busy road for nearly a kilometre before it is stopped.

Anil, who sustained injuries to his hands, subsequently filed a complaint with the Town Police.
