The Karnataka cabinet has approved the renaming of Ramnagar district to Bengaluru South, according to state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil. The decision followed an announcement made two months ago by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who stated that Ramnagar would be merged with Bangalore and renamed as Bangalore South.

The BJP had previously alleged that the name change was motivated by the desire to remove "Ram Nagar" from the district's name. Originally, Bangalore was a rural district before being renamed Ramnagar in 2016.

After the Cabinet meeting, he briefed reporters, stating: "Only the district's name will change; everything else will remain the same." The proposal to rename the neighboring Ramanagara district, which includes Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli taluks, to 'Bengaluru South' has recently gained momentum.

On Karnataka government's decision, BJP MP Dinesh Sharma, talking to PTI said, "Whether it is the Congress government in Karnataka or their government in Telangana, they are busy spreading the poison of communalism. It is well-known that they have an aversion to Ram. They even change the names of localities where Ram's name is present, which shows their petty mentality."

The government's decision to rename the district is linked to the upcoming Greater Bangalore project. The cabinet's approval of this change was confirmed in the latest meeting.

This renaming is part of a broader effort to integrate Ramanagara with the expanding urban landscape of Bangalore, aligning with the development goals of the Greater Bangalore project. Meanwhile, Ramanagara is known for its sericulture and nick named as 'silk town'.
