'Meat In Question Originates From Sheep': Karnataka Minister Junks 'Dog Meat' Claim

Earlier, tension erupted at Bengaluru City Railway Station when a consignment of meat weighing approximately three tonnes and packed in around 150 cartons arrived from Jaipur by train.

Amid media reports claiming that 'dog meat' was seized from a container transported from Rajasthan, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has announced that lab results have confirmed the meat in question was from sheep. The announcement was made to dispel the speculation and misinformation surrounding the issue.

In a tweet, Minister Rao stated, "Following recent media reports alleging the transportation of mutton and other animal meat from Rajasthan to Bengaluru via train, we committed to thoroughly investigating this matter through scientific verification. To ensure accuracy, we sent a total of 84 parcels to the ICAR-National Meat Research Institute in Hyderabad for rigorous lab analysis."

"After meticulous testing, the lab results have conclusively confirmed that the meat in question originates from sheep. This finding lays to rest any speculation or misinformation surrounding the issue," he said.

Railway sources indicated that Puneeth Kerehalli, a cow vigilante previously jailed on murder charges, claimed the shipment contained dog meat. However, Abdul Razzaq, the meat dealer who had ordered the consignment, dismissed these allegations, stating the meat was legally procured sheep meat.

In response to the protests, BBMP health officials and police arrived at the scene. The Cottonpet Police confiscated the meat, and BBMP health officials collected samples for testing.

The confirmation from the ICAR-National Meat Research Institute has now put an end to the controversy, affirming that the meat was indeed sheep and not dog.
