Jharkhand News: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday claimed that Jharkhand minister Champai Soren had been under 'surveillance of his own government' police for last five months. He further stated that two sub-inspectors (SIs) of Special Branch of Jharkhand Police were nabbed by Soren's people in a Delhi hotel while they were keeping watch on the ex-chief minister, Sarma said.

Speaking at a press conference, the Assam CM said, "This is one of rarest case of surveillance in Indian politics, we will raise it at the highest levels". "As per the two SIs, orders to track Soren came from a 'person in Constitutional position' and the Special Branch chief," he said.

Elaborating on his claims, the BJP leader said that during his two visits to the national capital, Champai Soren stayed at the Taj Hotel, but yesterday it came to light that during both visits, Jharkhand's Special Branch Police followed him. Sarma further stated that two Special Branch personnel who were allegedly following Soren were detained by Delhi police.

"...Champai Soren has decided to join BJP...Till the time he does not resign, he is a minister in the Jharkhand government and also the former CM. A week ago he had gone to Delhi and he spent three days. Again on 26th August, he had gone to Delhi. He stayed at the Taj Hotel during both his visits. But yesterday it came to light that both times he went to Delhi, Jharkhand's Special Branch Police followed him...Two Special Branch personnel who were allegedly following Champai Soren were detained by Delhi police..."

"Both the police said that we had been given the responsibility of tracking Champai Soren wherever he goes in Jharkhand and even in Delhi...I still doubt that maybe his phone is also tapped," he further stated. Sarma said the two SIs were handed over to Delhi police, who are taking forward the investigation.

The Assam CM said it is also suspected now that Soren's phones could be tapped and there might have been a plan to 'honey trap' him as a woman had also been meeting the two SIs.

Referring to the former Jharkhand CM's announcement of joining the saffron party on August 30, Sarma claimed, "Soren was put under surveillance even before he was in talks with the BJP," as quoted by PTI.
