Jammu and Kashmir have been reeling under incessant rainfalls for the past three days resulting in flash floods, inundation of roads, and landslides. The rainfalls have also increased water levels in rivers and streams prompting authorities to announce the closure of all schools in the valley on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.
The inclement weather condition has triggered landslides in the region resulting in damage to properties. A video shared by news agency ANI shows debris falling off a hill during a landslide in Bedar village in the Mandi area of Poonch, damaging several houses.
Several houses were reportedly damaged in the area due to heavy showers while another landslide was reported from Kishtwari on Monday as a result of the heavy showers.
The normal lives of residents in the valley took a hit due to the heavy rainfalls which led to the temporary closure of the Kupwara-Sopore national highway on Monday.
A danger warning was issued for the Pohru Nallah in Kupwara district, according to a PTI report while the water level in other water bodies of the valley, including the Jhelum river, is still below the alert mark.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the wet weather will persist till Tuesday evening. "The weather will be generally dry with no major activity from May 1 to May 5," said the weather department.
Given the rains, all examinations scheduled to be held on Tuesday at the University of Kashmir were postponed and the Directorate of School Education, Kashmir, issued the order to suspend classes in all schools up to the higher secondary level.
