Days after the death of a student due to ragging at Jadavpur University made headlines, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has said that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will help the state in curbing the ragging cases through advanced technology. Bose reached out to the Indian space agency for identifying an appropriate technology solution to curb the menace of ragging on college and university campuses, reported PTI citing a statement issued by Raj Bhavan.
Notably, a first-year undergraduate student died earlier this month after allegedly being ragged and sexually harassed in a hostel of Jadavpur University. The incident sparked an outcry in West Bengal.
"C V Ananda Bose, Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal and Chancellor of the universities contacted the Chairman of ISRO for identifying appropriate technology to effectively contain and eliminate the menace of ragging in the university campuses," the statement said on Thursday night, quoted PTI. It added that the Governor also held discussions with a Hyderabad-based firm over the issue.
"They are trying to develop an appropriate technology solution using multiple sources such as video analytics, image matching automatic target recognition and remote sensing," the governor said in the statement.
Jadavpur University Ragging Case
Meanwhile, a total of 13 people, including both current and former students, have been arrested in connection with the death of an undergraduate student in Jadavpur University. The boy died days after joining the university by falling from the second floor of the main hostel building. Other students at the university hinted that the student was subjected to ragging at the university.
Days after the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched an anti-ragging helpline for all education institutions in the state. Students from any education institute across West Bengal can report any incident of ragging on the new 24x7 West Bengal Anti-Ragging Helpline - 1800 345 5678. The move comes following severe backlash on the West Bengal government following the death of a first year student at the Jadavpur University after being subjected to alleged ragging in the campus.
