New Delhi: Mumbai found itself in the grip of a severe heatwave on Monday, with temperatures soaring amid a warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the same in Maharashtra's capital as well as neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts for two days.
According to officials from the IMD, the maximum temperature in three districts, including Mumbai, is expected to reach as high as 38 degrees Celsius. A heatwave warning has been issued for Mumbai, as well as Raigad and Thane districts, for both Monday and Tuesday. IMD Mumbai officials have indicated that temperatures could range between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius during this period.
The civic administration in Mumbai has already issued guidelines for people to tackle the heatwave this summer season.
PM Modi's High-Level Meet On Heatwave Preparedness
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 11 chaired a meeting to review preparedness for the ensuing heat wave season. The Prime Minister was briefed about the temperature outlook for the period from April to June 2024 including the forecasts for the upcoming hot weather season (April to June), the likelihood of above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country, especially with high probability over Central India and western peninsular India.
This meeting came against the backdrop of anticipated extreme weather conditions during the summer months. Stressing the importance of collaborative efforts, PM Modi urged all levels of government, central, state, and district to coordinate effectively. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) disclosed that the meeting specifically addressed preparedness in the health sector. Key areas such as the availability of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), and access to safe drinking water were meticulously reviewed.
