Gujarat Rain Kills 7, Triggers Flood In Major Areas, IMD Red Alert Still In Place: Updates

Torrential rains in Gujarat have resulted in fatalities, evacuations, and disruptions due to waterlogging. The IMD has issued a "red alert" for continued heavy rainfall till August 29.

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in many parts of Gujarat leading to casulaties and throwing life out of gear for the people. The relentless downpour since the last two days have led to waterlogging in many areas and respite does not seem in sight as India Meteorological Department has issued 'red alert' till August 29. 

 

Releasing of 4 lakh cusecs of water from Sardar Sarovar Dam into Narmada river added to woes in Bharuch where 280 people residing in low-lying areas had to be shifted to safer places. The water level also continued to rise in Sant Sarovar Dam in Gandhinagar. 

  

 

Other districts that have been affected by the heavy rains are: Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Ahmedabad, Aravalli, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Dang, Tapi, Surat, Narmada, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad.

Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Dwarka, Botad, and Kutch also remain affected. 

• At least seven people were killed in rain-related incidents in the state while more than 6,000 people were evacuated to safer places, reported PTI. Four people were killed in a wall collapse incidents in Gandhinagar, Kheda and Vadodara districts. One person died after a tree fell on him while two others drowned in Anand district. 


• Heavy rains prompted the authorities to shut schools on Tuesday. 


• A tractor carrying 17 people washed away while crosing a bridge at Dhavana on Sunday. Nine people managed to swim across but eight people went missing, reported Hindustan Times. Similarly, five people were swept away in Ghanad. Four of them were rescued while search was on till late Monday for a woman who went missing. 

• Ahmedabad Airport also issued an advisory to the passengers urging them to check their flight schedules before leaving for airport.


• "Due to the prediction of heavy rain over the next few days in Ahmedabad, we request passengers to check flight schedules with their respective airlines before leaving for the Airport. Passengers travelling through SVPI Airport are advised to allocate additional time for check-in processes for a seamless travel experience. Our teams are working round the clock to enable a comfortable journey," the advisory stated. 

• The incessant rains caused waterloggin in various parts of the state including Malpur Taluka, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Ahmedabad.
