Municipal Corporation of Delhi on August 1 sealed 34 more basements of coaching centres in the West, Central, and Najafgarh zones that had been operating illegally, adding to the tally of 35 basements that the civic body had sealed in the national capital since Sunday. With today's sealing, the tally now stands at 69.


The basements of coaching centres that were sealed today included 23 in West zone, eight in the Central zone, and three in the Najafgarh zone.


"In the Central zone, 14 coaching centers were issued notices, out of which 6 vacated the premises, and 8 were sealed," MCD said.






The sealing and encroachment drive is being carried out across Delhi, following the deaths of three civil services aspirants, who drowned in a flooded basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar.


On Wednesday, the MCD sealed five basements in West Delhi and South Delhi zones, leading the tally to reach 35. Of these five, three were sealed in West Delhi, while two were sealed in South Delhi zones.

Delhi Education Minister and MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi said during a joint press conference on July 31 that 30 basements were sealed in Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, and Preet Vihar, and notices were issued to 200 others.


The MCD had also carried out an anti-encroachment drive in South Delhi's Magangir ward during the day on Wednesday.


"A joint team of the MCD undertook the drive near Sheetla Mata Mandir and markets adjoining Gurudwara road in Madangir," an official statement said. 


"As many as 150 illegal structures and 72 tin-sheet canopies were removed with assistance of JCB machines as part of the drive. The action led to the seizure of several items," it added.


The statemenrt further said that several illegal stalls and shops on both sides of the road and on the footpath were also removed. "Encroachments were also removed along walls of MCD Primary School in Sector 4 Dr Ambedkar Nagar," the statement noted.


The civic body had also said that anti-encroachment drives will also be conducted in other parts of the capital as well.
