New Delhi: The preliminary post-mortem report of the minor girl who was killed in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district earlier this week has revealed that death occurred due to some poisonous substance and there was no injury marks found on the body, news agency PTI quoted Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Sana Akhtar as saying. Police further said that a 20-year-old man, identified as the prime accused in the case, was arrested.

“Victim's post-mortem report given by doctors reveals that death was due to a poisonous substance. No major injury. We will again ask doctors to clarify if there's any sexual injury,” the SP said. "We are investigating the case from all angles," he added.

The 17-year-old girl, whose body was found in a canal in Kaliaganj police station area on Friday, knew the man, police further said.

A case has been filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act based on the complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, the SP said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare of West Bengal, Shashi Panja accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misleading people and playing divisive politics over the matter.

“Why would police hide anything? BJP doesn’t care a girl has died and that she must get justice. Two people have already been arrested. Investigation is underway. They are misleading people, and doing divisive politics. We condemn this. BJP is using this matter for their own publicity. They came with press deliberately,” ANI quoted the Trinamool Congress minister as saying.

Fresh Violence In Bengal

Fresh violence erupted in Kaliaganj as locals staged protests against the incident on Saturday. Police had to resort to gas shells and charge batons to bring the situation under control, PTI reported.

Several shops and e-rickshaws were set on fire by the agitating mob, that demanded the arrest of those behind the incident. Roads were also blocked and stones were hurled at the police, as per the report.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) had to be deployed to bring the situation under control, police said, adding that a few protestors were also detained.

Three persons who sustained injuries in the police action were admitted to the Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital.

BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar sat on a dharna outside the SP office in Raiganj, demanding justice for the girl’s family. He also demanded a CBI probe into the incident. "We think the real truth will be revealed only if a CBI inquiry is conducted in this case," PTI quoted him as saying.
