Parts of Kolkata, including Lake Gardens and Minto Park, experienced waterlogging as heavy rains swept through the region.

The devastation caused includes uprooted trees and knocked-down electricity poles. While the cyclone has weakened, rainfall persists in various parts of the state.

The severe cyclonic storm weakened into a cyclonic storm on Monday morning, sustaining wind speeds of 80-90 kilometres per hour, following landfall around midnight of Sunday, said the India Meteorological Department on Monday.

It is likely to move northeastwards and weaken further, the department said in a bulletin.

Rescue operations kicked in immediately as the cyclone made landfall, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stepping in to remove uprooted trees and provide other assistance. Over 1 lakh people were evacuaed from vulnerable areas ahead of the cyclone.
