A cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir has led to a flood-like situation in the Doda district as rain and flood fury continue to sweep north India. According to ANI, restoration work is underway in Leh after the cloudburst increased the risk of flood in the region. Heavy downpour has been disrupting normal life across Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Maharashtra. In Jammu and Kashmir, a batch of over 3,000 Amarnath pilgrims was briefly stopped in Ramban on Saturday following landslides at two places along the Jammu-Srinagar highway, officials said, as per PTI.
Landslides due to rains were also reported from Mehar and Dalwas areas along the 270-km highway but after the removal of debris, traffic movement was restored, officials said, as quoted by PTI.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Chenab River increased following the cloudburst and rain in Jammu and Srinagar. Officials said that the cloudburst around the Kota Nullah in the Doda district early this morning washed away a stretch of the Thaleela-Chirala link road. It led to mudslides and a flood-like situation in Kota Nullah. However, no loss of life or injury was reported, the officials further told PTI. SP Bhaderwah Vinod Sharma told PTI that one person has been rescued and advised residents to not come out of their houses.
Torrential rains continued in Doda and Kishtwar districts for the third day on Saturday, resulting in the increase in water level in the Chenab and its tributaries Neeru and Kalnai. As per PTI, authorities have advised people to stay away from rivers, streams, and other vulnerable spots.
The report further mentioned that a Gujjar hamlet at Ghadkhal in the Akhnoor sector on the outskirts of Jammu was inundated due to a rise in the water level of Chenab.
A water department official told the agency that light to moderate rains and thunderstorms have been reported from many parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Rainfall is likely to continue throughout the day with the prediction of heavy showers in certain areas such as those in Kathua district. The official added, as per PTI, that the state will witness intermittent light to moderate rain at scattered places on Sunday.
According to officials, the current water level of the Chenab at Akhnoor is 29.6 feet against the flood alert level of 32 feet, the PTI report added. Meanwhile, authorities have deployed men and machinery to clear debris from the road and restore it at the earliest, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Thathri, Athar Amin Zargar said. According to PTI, he added that the Doda-Kishtwar stretch of the highway has been restored for two-way traffic.
