New Delhi: The BJP on Thursday appointed Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Bhupendra Chaudhary as the party's chief in the state. This is the first time that a Jat leader has been given the command. As per the discipline of the BJP, Choudhary will have to resign from the post of the minister after the name is announced for the post of president. The 54-year-old Bhupendra Chaudhary was elected a member of the Legislative Council for the first time in 2016.

In 2017, when the BJP government was formed in the state, he was made the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Panchayati Raj Department.

In the 2019 cabinet reshuffle, Chaudhary was made a cabinet minister. In Yogi Adityanath government 2.0, Chaudhary was again made the cabinet minister and given the responsibility of the Panchayati Raj department. Chaudhary has recently been re-elected as a member of the Legislative Council.

Chaudhary's appointment is seen as the party's attempt to reach out to the Jat vote bank in western Uttar Pradesh.
