West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party state unit chief Sukanta Majumdar on Friday wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and demanded an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the attack on the Enforcement Directorate team in Sandeshkhali today.

Speaking on the attack on the ED team, West Bengal Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Leader Shashi Panja said any kind of violence is not supported by TMC, but the villagers were complaining that they were provoked by the central forces that were accompanying the investigative agencies.

"Any kind of violence is not supported by TMC but the villagers were complaining that they were provoked by the central forces which were accompanying the investigative agencies. MoS Nisith Pramanik has been talking about cooperative federalism that Bengal lacks in federalism. Federalism means that there should be good relations between the centre and the state. The centre must cooperate with the states. But what we see here and Nisith Pramanik, you should answer, have you even asked for the MNREGA funds which are due to Bengal? Have you ever asked the Center why they are not providing funds for housing for the rural poor? You never raised your voice for this," Shashi Panja said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

On Friday, a mob attacked vehicles of the ED and central forces during a raid being conducted on Shankar Adhya, close aide of jailed West Bengal minister Jyotipriya Mallick. The probe agency was carrying out raids in connection with the alleged ration scam in North 24 Parganas district's Sandeshkhali.

BJP MP Locket Chatterjee took a pot shot at the TMC over the attack on the ED team and said that the goons of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan attacked the team of the probe agency. She further stated that the NIA should investigate this incident and that the accused should be arrested.

"Today is a dark day for West Bengal. The goons of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan attacked the ED team. They (TMC) will do corruption and if ED, CBI teams go there to investigate it, they will attack them. The public will answer them in 2024. NIA should investigate this incident and the accused should be arrested."

BJP leader Anirban Ganguly said, "This has never happened. This is a serious issue...I've been saying that Shahjahan Sheikh is a threat to public peace...He has been given a free hand in South-24 Parganas. He does a lot of illegal activities there and controls law & order," as quoted by ANI.
