Karnataka police detained Legislative Assembly and BJP leader R Ashoka for staging a protest against the state government over the arrest of Shrikant Pujari, who was arrested for alleged involvement in the riots after the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992. The BJP workers who have been staging a protest against the arrest intensified it by launching 'I'm also a Karsevak, Arrest Me Too' campaign on Thursday.


According to ANI, LoP Karnataka Legislative Assembly & BJP leader R Ashoka detained by police. 


He along with party workers was protesting against the state government over the arrest of Shrikant Pujari, who was arrested for alleged involvement in the riots after the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992.

On Thursday, V Sunil Kumar, a Karnataka MLA and former minister, was detained for the same reason. He spearheaded the campaign and led a sit-in demonstration near the Sadashivanagar police station in Bengaluru. Accompanied by BJP workers chanting "Jai Sri Ram," he held a placard declaring 'I'm also a Karsevak, Arrest Me Too.' Kumar said that he participated in the Rama temple agitation in 1992 and demanded his arrest for the same. Subsequently, the police took him into preventive custody.


Shrikanth Poojary, aged 51, has been implicated in a total of 16 cases spanning the last 31 years. Among these, he was booked in three cases related to inciting riots and inflicting harm. In addition to the accusations from 1991, he is said to have been charged with rioting in 2001 and 2014. Poojary's friend also claimed that the case filed against Poojary was based on “wrong information”.
