Guwahati: Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday attacked Congress calling it “inept” and “corrupt” by saying that the party allegedly failed to deliver and “betrayed” the trust of the people during its six decades of “misrule.”

The senior BJP leader, who is contesting the upcoming general elections from Assam’s Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, addressed a series of meetings in the Khowang assembly segment, as campaigning has picked up momentum with the constituency going for polls in the first phase on April 19.

Addressing the gathering in one of the meetings, Sonowal lashed out at the Congress over its alleged “divisive politics,” which has allegedly led to a division in the society during the party’s six decades of misrule.

“For six decades, the misrule of Congress has created rifts, resulting in unrest, differential treatment and rampant corruption. The Congress has become synonymous with rampant corruption, nepotism, and their obsession to please one family. Their complete oblivion for public welfare policies, disregard to the cause of nation building, and living inside a bubble of nepotism, has resulted in their irrelevance in this election,” Sonowal said.

The Union Minister also criticised the Opposition parties in Assam for forging an alliance with the Congress, a party which he said, made the state bleed during the Assam agitation.

“Those who are riding on the back of the Congress must ask themselves and also answer the people of Assam about the unholy tie-up for their political interests. They must answer the people as to why they chose to align with the Congress, the party which made Assam bleed with the martyrdom of 855 young students during the Assam agitation. They must answer as to how they have aligned with the Congress, when the same party brought the draconian Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) (IMDT) Act to the state,” he added.

Sonowal further said that Assam, which languished under the corrupt and inept Congress government, has now been growing steadily with world-class infrastructure development.
