India Drops Below Pakistan To 4th Position In WTC Standings After Points Penalty

The penalty by ICC has helped Pakistan push India down to fourth spot and move themselves up to third position in WTC Points Table. 

New Delhi: England scripted history on Tuesday by winning the fifth and final Test between India and England in Birmingham by 7 wickets. With this win, the 5-match Test series ended in a 2-2 draw. The Indian cricket team has suffered a huge loss in the World Test Championship Points Table (WTC Points Table). Jasprit Bumrah-led India have have been penalised by ICC for slow over-rate in Ind vs Eng 5th Test. Apart from this, India have also been fined 40 percent of their match fee for the offence. The penality by ICC has helped Pakistan push India down to fourth spot and move themselves up to third position in WTC Points Table. 

Before this match, India had 58.33 percentage points, but after the penalty and loss against England in Edgbaston Test, India now has 52.08 percent points. On the other hand, England is in 7th position with 33.33 percentage points after their win over India. Pakistan has moved above India with 52.38 percent points.

"As per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Since India fell short by two overs after time allowances were taken into consideration, they were docked two WTC points," ICC said in a statement.

India managed to retain in top 3

Even after the loss to England, the Indian team is present at the fourth spot in the World Test Championship Points Table but the WTC final match will be played between the top-2 teams. If India wants to make it to the final, then they will have to win all their upcoming Test matches. Also, India's chances of making it to the finals will depend on the match results of Australia-South Africa. India now has to play 2 Test matches with Bangladesh (away) and 4 with Australia (home).

Batting first after losing the toss, India scored 416 runs in the first innings after being all out. Pant scored 146 and Jadeja scored 104 in the first innings.

In reply to 416 runs, England got all out for 284 runs in their first innings. Jonny Bairstow scored a brilliant century in England's first innings. He played an innings of 106 runs in 140 balls. For India, Siraj took 4 wickets and Bumrah took 3 wickets for India.

In their second innings, India scored 245 runs. England won the Test by scoring 378 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their second innings. Root scored an unbeaten 142 and Bairstow played an unbeaten inning of 114 runs.
