World championship silver-medalist wrestler Deepak Punia along with two other sportsman tested positive for the novel Coronavirus upon his arrival at the national camp. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) in a statement confirmed about the health status of the wrestler saying that Punia has been discharged from hospital and advised home isolation.

The nodal sports authorities earlier this week on Thursday had informed that three senior men’s wrestlers, who had reported to the National Wrestling Camp at SAI Centre in Sonepat, have tested positive for COVID -19 virus.


The includes Olympic-bound Punia (86kg), Navin (65kg) and Krishan (125kg), who all are part of a national camp at the SAI Centre in Sonepat. On being found to be infected with the deadly Coronavirus, all three were moved to a SAI empanelled hospital as a precautionary measure for further monitoring.


Updating on their health conditions today, Sports Authority of India in a Tweet said, "Wrestler Deepak Punia tested Covid positive during the test given by SAI upon arrival at the National Camp in Sonepat, and was in hospital. Now he''s been advised home quarantine by doctors as he''s stable & asymptomatic. His home stay is approved by District Covid Nodal Officer."

Earlier Asian Games gold medal-winning woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat tested positive for coronavirus. Phogat was tested by the Indian government as per the protocol as she was to receive Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country's top sports accolade.
