The first Indian boxer in action at the semifinal of the Women's World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, Nitu Ghanghas continued her impressive form in the tournament and guaranteed India of a silver medal in the 48 kg category. She defeated Alua Balkibekova of Kazakhstan in her semifinal contest.
Earlier, Nitu had won all her previous matches in this tournament by Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) but this time around she got the better of her opponent through a split decision 5-2 in her favour.
Meanwhile, reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen also assured India of a silver medal after she beat Ingrit Valencia of Colombia in the 50 kg semifinal through a unanimous 5-0 decision. Both the puglists will now participate in the final on Saturday. While this will be Nitu's first medal at the Boxing Championships, Nikhat will be in with a chance to secure back to back gold medals at the World Championships.
Meanwhile, there are two more Indians that will be competing later this evening in the semifinals of the Women's World Boxing Championships with Lovlina Borgohain up against Li Qian of China in the 75 kg category and Saweety Boora to take on Sue- Emma Greentree of Australia in the final four contest of the 81 kg category.
The Indian contingent would hoping for both the remaining boxers to also play the gold medal match happening in their home. Lovlina has shown glimpses of great form with 5-0 win over Mozambique’s Rady Gramane in her quarterfinal contest, Saweety, on the other hand, had also beat Belarus' Viktoriya Kebikava 5-0 after a receiving a bye in her previous round.
