Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova has upset Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon Women's singles on Saturday. Vondrousova registered a win in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to emerge as the Grass-court Grand slam champion, a year after she was in London for the event as a tourist. Ranked 42nd in the world in the singles category, Vondrousova had a dream run to the final and continued her dominance in the titular contest where she got the better of an opponent who was ranked among top 10. Vondrousova had entered the competition as an unseeded player but leaves as the Wimbledon champion in a remarkable performance, becoming the first-ever in women's tennis to do so at the Wimbledon Championships.

Vondrousova had started off proceedings this year at the All England Lawn Tennis Club with a rather convincing 6-1, 7-5 win over her American opponent Peyton Stearns in the first round. She then went past Russia's Veronika Kudermetova in the second round beating her in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. In the third round, she was up against Croatia's Donna Vekik who she beat 6-1, 7-5. In the Round of 16, Vondrousova faced her compatriot Marie Bouzkova where she came back from behind to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the quarter-final America's Jessica Pegula locked horns with Vondrousova but the Czech player came out on top 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to seal a place for herself in the final four. Perhaps Vondrousova had saved her best for the semifinal and the final with Vondrousova beating Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 before her win in the final.
Meanwhile, Ons Jabeur who was the second best on the day despite a fight of sorts in the second set, described the defeat as the "most painful" one of her career at the post-match on-court interview.
