While fans could be divided over who the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) is when it comes to the world of football, it is definitely not a matter of debate that the name Lionel Messi will feature if ever a list of the great players who played the sport is comprised. In a professional career spanning close to 2 decades, Messi has won almost every trophy that there is to win and got hold of several accolades along the way.
However, one trophy that he hasn't had the opportunity of lifting so far is the FIFA World Cup. While he did come close to lifting it in 2014 but on that occasion too, his dream was shattered as Mario Gotze scored an extra time goal to extend Messi's wait. Despite his failure to lead Argentina to a World Cup title, fans from the country absolutely adore him.
In a video which has now gone viral, a reporter could be seen telling Messi what he means to the people of the country. She thanks Messi and tells him that he resonates with every single Argentinian. The 35-year-old appears a bit emotional as he listens attentively to the reporter.
"Thank you, captain," says reporter to Leo
"The last thing I want to tell you, and it's not a question, but I just wanted to say the World Cup final is coming and sure, we all [Argentinians] want to win the cup. I just want to tell you that no matter the results, there's something that no one can take from you, and it's the fact you resonated with Argentinians, every single one. I'm being serious. There's no kid who doesn't have your team flannel, no matter if it's a fake, real, or made-up one," a social media user translated what the journalist says in the video.
"Truly, you made your mark in everyone's life. And that, to me, is beyond winning any World Cup. No one can take that from you and this is my gratitude, for the amount of happiness you bring to a lot of people. I seriously hope you take those words to your heart because I really believe that's more important than winning a World Cup and you already have it. So thank you, captain," she added.
