Dominic Thiem made it to his first finals at the US Open after he defeated third seed Daniil Medvedev in the men's singles semifinals played out at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows.

The second seed Austrian did not have to break two much sweat as he registered a straight set win over his Russian opponent and last edition's finalist with the scoreline reading 6-2, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5).

Thiem will now lock horns against No. 5 seed Alexander Zverev, who happened to book a place in his maiden grand slam after beating 20th seed Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in a five set grueling semifinal encounter.

While Theim had defeated to Australian Alex De Minaur to book a place into the last four, Medvedev beat fellow Russian and childhood friend Andrey Rublev to book his place in the semifinals.

Thiem who has lost all three of his previous grand slam finals, losing back-to-back French Opens to Rafael Nadal in 2018 and 2019 and this year’s Australian Open to top-ranked Novak Djokovic, will be bidding to put an end to his grand slam jinx and win his maiden title.

In the absence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer and the shocking exit of top seed Novak Djokovic, the 2020 US Open will witness a new grand slam men's singles champion outside the much famed 'Big 3' after 2016 when Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka won the title.
