Tokyo Paralympics 2020: India's Nishad Kumar wins silver medal in Men's High Jump T47 Final at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday. With a World Record jump of 2.15m, USA's Roderick Townsend secured the gold medal in the same event. The event turned out to be a good one for para-athlete Nishad Kumar as he not only confirmed a second medal for India with a silver medal win but also went on to create a new Aisan record.
Dallas Wise, who finished on the same mark with Nishad, recorded a jump of 2.15m to share the second spot with him. However, Nishad had crossed the 2.02 mark in his first attempt while Wise took two. India's Rampal Chahar finished at the fifth spot with a jump of 1.94m.
Earlier in the day, India's para table tennis player Bhavina lost the gold medal match against China's Zhou Ying 3-0 in the women's singles - Class 4 to secure a silver medal. Bhavina lost the final 7-11, 5-11, 6-11. With the historic win, Bhavina became the first ever Indian table tennis player to win a medal at the Paralympics and the second female athlete after PCI chief Deepa Malik to achieve this feat. Deepa had won silver at Rio 2016 in women's shot put.
Bhavina hails from the Mehsana district of Gujarat. The state government of Gujarat has announced a cash reward of rupees 3 crore for the silver medalist.
Bhavina recieved a lot of praise for her performance at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. India's prime minister, Narendra Modi said that the table tennis player has "scripted history" for India. Even the likes of Rahul Gandhi, Deepa Malik, Virender Sehwag and many others wished Bhavina on her victory.
