New Delhi: Tokyo Olympics 2021 was caught in yet another political controversy on  Monday that could see it's immediate cancellation, as early as next month itself.

Popular Japanese actor and aspiring governor candidate Taro Yamamoto today announced that if elected for the Tokyo governor's post next month, he would cancel the Tokyo Olympics, that was postponed to next year following the outbreak of the Corona pandemic. Tokyo Olympics is now slated to begin July 23 next year.

Elections for the Tokyo governor is slated for July 5 and Yamamoto, who is the candidate from opposition party Reiwa Shinsengumi will take on current governor Yuriko Koike, who is seeking reelection.

A lot of debate went into the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics with even the International Olympic Council of the view that if there is any further postponement of the Olympics, Tokyo Games could be cancelled.

With the Corona pandemic still not under complete control and Tokyo facing an economic crisis and shortage of essential and medical supplies, many people have questioned the organisation of Olympics. It has become a subject of severe political and public debate with several surveys taking place internally but this is the first time that any political party or its candidate has used the cancellation of Tokyo Games as its poll plank.
