New Delhi: The political turmoil in Sri Lanka that erupted due to an economic crisis in the island nation has now reached its breaking point. The demonstration against Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the capital Colombo has turned intense. On Saturday, thousands of protesters marched towards  Rajapaksa's official residence and eventually occupied it. The President eventually was forced to leave his residence and run away. Protestors since March have been demanding resignation of President Rajapaksa as they blame him for country's decline.

Violent protests have been going on in Sri Lanka for several months. Former Sri Lankan captain and veteran batter Sanath Jayasuriya appeared with protesters in the capital city Colombo on Saturday, demanding resignation of the President Rajapaksa.

As Jayasuriya joined the anti-government protests, he also posted a few pictures with the protesters on Twitter and wrote, “I always stand with the People of Sri Lanka. And will celebrate victory soon. This should be continue without any violation.”

“The siege is over. Your bastion has fallen. Aragalaya and people power has won. Please have the dignity to resign now ! #GoHomeGota,” Jayasuriya said in another tweet.

Mass protests have been going on for several months in Sri Lanka amid the economic crisis. A few weeks ago, demonstrators had marched towards the house of Mahinda Rajapaksa, the country's former prime minister and Gotabaya's brother, which led to a fierce confrontation between security personnel and protestors.
