New Delhi: India's Sushila Devi Likabam won a silver medal in the women's 48 kg category of the judo event of the Commonwealth Games 2022. In a tight contest, Sushila was defeated in the final by South Africa's Michaela Whitebooi. This is Sushila's second medal in CWG. The Judoka won a silver medal back in 2014. Apart from weightlifting, this is India's first and overall 7th medal in the ongoing CWG 2022. So far, India has won 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

The final bout for the gold proved to be an intense encounter between Sushila and Michaela as both judokas were giving it all until the final whistle. Both failed to register a single point at the end of regulation time. The competition then went into a golden score time, where the South African judoka won the gold medal by winning a point by placing Sushila Devi's shoulder on the mat i.e via 'Waza-Ari' in 4.25 minutes. In the quarterfinal, Shushila had defeated Harriet Bonface and then attained her second win by defeating Mauritius' Priscilla Morand in the semifinals to secure a medal.

Manipur-based judoka Sushila won the gold medal in the 2019 South Asian Games. She had qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics as the sole representative for India in Judo.
